SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The Hart District has cut its construction budget deficit by more than half -- down to about $50 million -- by scaling back projects and tapping funding options, but officials say there is still more work to be done.

A report released Wednesday night by the Dolinka Group consultants says the Hart Union High School District's cash shortfall, originally thought to top $115 million, has been reduced to $53 million.

The district scrapped a plan for an alternative high school on the Synergy Keystone development in Canyon Country, sparing about $60 million. It also reduced the cost of the impending im·pend

But Rob Gapper, Hart's chief operations officer, said funding was increased for modernizing Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:

The district's long-term capital budget is for construction, reconstruction and land purchases to serve the growing district. It is separate from the yearly operating budget Noun 1. operating budget - a budget for current expenses as distinct from financial transactions or permanent improvements

"It is great that our shortfall has been cut almost in half," said Sue Guthrie, Hart's chief financial officer. "But we are still working towards balancing our revenue and expenditures."

Guthrie said the district's accounting department will be assessing the value of district-owned properties, such as the former district offices and the old Bowman High School site -- the first step toward selling off those assets.

The report also suggests the district look to the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. Rick Patterson, founder and member of the foundation board, said its mission is to buy land for schools, not to fund district projects.

"Like good farmers we've planted our seeds, planning for the district's future need for sites," Patterson said. "But we're flexible."

District officials are looking to every avenue for the $50 million to finance their list of projects, including the possibility of a bond measure on an upcoming ballot, Gapper said.
