HART DEALS WITH LOSS TO RECORD PLAYOFF WIN\Hart 48, Rio Mesa 26.

 much of a chance against Rio Mesa on Thursday night in the first round of the Southern Section Division I-A girls' basketball playoffs.

"A lot of people didn't think we could do it," coach Dave Munroe said.

Well, a lot of people were proved wrong. Really wrong.

Senior center Jaclyn Kuptz limited Chante Guggia, the Spartans' talented 6-foot-1 center, to eight points and one field goal.

As a team, Rio Mesa (17-8) shot only 22 percent (8 for 36) from the field, including 1 for 19 in the second and fourth quarters. The Indians shot 57 percent (20 for 35), with the bulk of the shots coming from the 10-foot range.

The offense had to come from somewhere. Boller scored 20 points to account for just about all of it on Dec. 28, when Hart lost 47-45 to the Spartans (17-8) in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

"Since Candace is gone, everybody has had to step up," said Kuptz, who did her share with eight points, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Teammates Wendy Downen and Amanda Hoaglund each added six points and four steals.
