Much of the boys' future depends on the fitness of Tim Gregory. Gregory just had pins removed from his ankle several weeks ago. He's tried to work out but found his leg can't handle much right now.

``We're hoping he gets healthy at some point,'' coach Jeff Gilky said. ``He wants so badly to race. One of the coaches was saying the other day that (Gregory) has itchy itch·y

Hart has 190-plus athletes who came out for track. The Indians also have 12 coaches, including two former head coaches who came aboard as assistants. Keith Jones Keith Jones may refer to:

``When you have 190 kids, it sure helps to have that many coaches out there,'' Gilky said.

Keith Howell, a wide receiver on the football team, returns as a senior to run sprints and jumps. He was impressive in the season's opening meet, leaping nearly 22 feet in the long jump at the Don Green Memorial track meet at Moorpark High.

Dan, a sophomore, is built like Keith and might contribute in his first year on the team. The Indians will get a lift Saturday when Chris Pettyjohn, a transfer from Valencia, becomes eligible. Pettyjohn will run hurdles and relays.

``He's looking great in practice and we're really looking forward to seeing what he can do,'' Gilky said.

Had she posted the time she did the previous week, she would have qualified for state.

``I guess I was just tired,'' said Russell, who had a late start last year because of an injury during the cross country season. ``I think I'm stronger this year. Making it to state would be really nice.''

Angela Nishida started last season as a hurdler but started seeing time in sprints and finished second in the league in the 100. This year she is expected to see action in both categories.

Though Hart might not be able to beat the best teams, it's depth should keep it in the upper echelon.

``Our depth in girls has gotten us through so many victories,'' Gilky said. ``Sometimes you pick up points just by filling all the lanes. Some teams in our league don't have that many girls.''
