HART CLINCHER IS UGLY : HART 38, BURROUGHS 6.Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer It was a typical Hart High School football effort. Or was it? David Neill passed for 249 yards and three touchdowns, Jerry Owens eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the season, and Billy Brecht rushed for 105 yards in the Indians' 32nd consecutive Foothill League victory, 38-6 Friday night at Burroughs See Unisys.. The win also clinched a share of a seventh league title in a row for Hart (8-1, 4-0). But the Indians didn't make it official until late, after Hart took a 17-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Neill threw his first interception in four weeks. The team had just five first downs and 27 rushing yards in the first half while picking up 71 yards in penalties. On one possession, Neill was sacked three times for 27 yards. ``We didn't play that great a game, and we still scored 38 points,'' Owens said after catching three passes for 92 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown. ``If we were on, we probably could have scored 50 or 60 points. We're happy we know we can score points when we don't play up to our potential.'' Burroughs (4-5, 1-3), which finished second last season, was eliminated from the playoffs. Yet it just as easily could have pulled off the victory if it executed. Consider: After Randy Beckmann ran back a 69-yard kickoff to start the game, Burroughs failed to score on a 24-yard field goal. Quarterback Chris Santoyo threw two interceptions and fumbled a snap. These miscues led to three Hart touchdowns. Three times Burroughs attempted fake punts and converted on none of them. The team drew 108 yards in penalties, keeping some Hart drives alive. ``We had moments when we could've gone ahead, but we didn't capitalize on our opportunities,'' Burroughs coach Keith Knoop said. Burroughs scored on the one drive in which it did capitalize. On a halfback option, Kyle Cremarosa hit a wide-open Glenn Adriatico for an 81-yard touchdown, cutting Hart's lead to 14-6. Hart took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Neill touchdown passes of 10 yards to Nate Small and 40 to Owens. Brecht, who rushed for zero yards in the first half and 41 yards midway through the fourth quarter, scored on a 2-yard run. John Harrison later scored on a 1-yard run and Neill hit Kyle Boller from 11 yards out. Nick Cristensen kicked all five extra points plus a 29-yard field goal. Shane Lavoie had two interceptions for Hart. |
