HART CLASSIC ROUNDUP: MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW FOR HART.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, - Ashley Calendo limited California High of Whittier to five singles, retiring the last 12 batters in order to help Hart of Newhall to a 1-0 victory and its fourth consecutive Hart Classic softball tournament championship Saturday at Central Park in Saugus. The victory was Calendo's first start of her career. But the junior right-hander pitched with confidence, keeping California ofalance with a variety of breaking pitches. Only once did California (5-1) threaten, loading the bases with one out in the third inning. But Calendo got Jennifer Davis on a bouncer to second and Christine Wann on a groundout ground·out n. Hart (4-0) scored in the third inning on Gloria Slakoff's run-scoring single to left, driving in Erica Duhart. California's Davis (2-1) allowed four singles, struck out 11 and held Hart hitless over the final 4 1/3 innings. ``They had a very good pitcher,'' Hart coach Cathy Giordano said. ``But we had just enough offense, and our defense played very strong.'' Giordano had faith in Calendo because the coach had a hunch Calendo's off-speed pitches would throw off California's timing. ``California is a big-hitting team, so that's why I wanted to use an off- speed pitcher,'' Giordano said. ``She moved the ball around a lot, and they just kept swinging away.'' California, which reached the Southern Section Division II championship game a year ago, returned five starters from that team. Meanwhile, Hart is rebuilding with just three seniors.
