Giordano had faith in Calendo because the coach had a hunch Calendo's off-speed pitches would throw off California's timing. ``California is a big-hitting team, so that's why I wanted to use an off- speed pitcher,'' Giordano said. ``She moved the ball around a lot, and they just kept swinging away.'' California, which reached the Southern Section Division II championship game a year ago, returned five starters from that team. Meanwhile, Hart is rebuilding with just three seniors.
