HART CATCHES SAUGUS; BOWEN'S BIG HITS GIVE INDIANS WIN : HART 4, SAUGUS 1.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer

Saugus High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Ron Hilton considered all the factors that went into his team's victory over Hart in their first meeting a few weeks ago. He concluded that his Centurions would complete a two-game season sweep of the Indians on Tuesday.

Hart's Becky Bowen had a premonition of her own. And her two hits and two RBI RBI

The victory moved Hart (17-4-1, 6-1) into a first-place tie with Saugus (11-9-1, 6-1) in the Foothill League.

``I knew from the time I got up (Tuesday) morning that it was going to be a big win,'' said Bowen, a junior designated hitter designated hitter

Lorian Jenkin and Bowen each followed Pickard with RBI singles of their own to extend the lead to 4-0.

Hart's Amanda Fortune gave up an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning after Walling reached first safely on an error. Julie Watson (2 for 4) then ripped an RBI double into left field, but Fortune retired Sandy Volk to end the game.

Fortune (9-1-1), despite only allowing five hits and one unearned run, was disappointed with her performance.

``None of my pitches were working well,'' she said. ``I just kind of dug in. I'm too stubborn just to give up.''

Saugus nearly tied it 1-1 in the fifth inning after putting runners on first and second with two outs. Center fielder Kelly Cornelison stroked a single into right field and Watson was sent home from second base.
