HART'S TEAM MASCOT WON'T CHANGE ITS NAME.

Byline: Eugene Tong Staff Writer

NEWHALL - The Hart High Indians have been spared the ax by Sacramento lawmakers.

The state Assembly approved a bill last week aiming to ban Native American-related mascot MASCOT - Modular Approach to Software Construction Operation and Test: a method for software design aimed at real-time embedded systems from the Royal Signals and Research Establishment, UK.  names from California public schools, but only the name ``Redskins'' would be dropped if the proposal becomes law.

Assembly Bill 858 now awaits passage by the state Senate and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature. If approved, it would require public school teams affected by the ban to find new names by Jan. 1, 2006. About five middle and high schools statewide use ``Redskins'' as their mascot.

Hart High officials have said they were waiting for direction from Sacramento before reacting to the possible ban, though the district has gradually excised images and caricatures of American Indians American Indians: see Americas, antiquity and prehistory of the; Natives, Middle American; Natives, North American; Natives, South American.  from their sports uniforms and logos, opting instead for a red circled ``H'' adorned a·dorn

Act called for a ban on common school standards as Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Apaches, Comanches, Papooses and Warriors - all deemed insensitive to American Indians. School officials estimated the changes would cost about $125,000.

But the hotly debated bill only passed the lower house 43-20 after Goldberg compromised to limit the ban to a name she said was the most ``egregious'' on the list.

``It's the oral equivalent of the N-word for African-Americans,'' Goldberg said.
