There was something missing.

Erin Misaki is among the nation's soccer elite. The Hart High senior competes for the U.S. under-18 national team. She entered the season knowing she had a soccer scholarship to the University of Portland The University of Portland (UP) is a private Catholic university located in Portland, Oregon.  to Foothill League titles in each of her first three years at the school.

Misaki wanted more.

``My motivation was I wanted to win everything,'' Misaki said. ``We hadn't won CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). . There was a missing piece.

``I love my teammates. We've played together for so long, I would do anything for them. I wanted to help them get as far as we could. That was motivation for me.''

Misaki achieved what she set out to do, turning in a season that makes her the Daily News Player of the Year.

She earned Foothill League MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. She was named All-Southern Section each of her four years at Hart.

``She's probably the best athlete that's been through the Valley,'' Hart coach Oliver Germond said. ``She's pretty much accomplished everything there is to do at the high school level.''

It wasn't long before opponents realized she required double- teaming. The quick and versatile player often broke through the added coverage and produced accurate shots from both short- and long-range.

The Indians went 84-14-12 during Misaki's career. They suffered just three league losses, two of which came this season. With a playoff play·off also play-off

, Misaki's leadership was integral to increasing Hart's intensity and guiding the Indians through their toughest league race.

``We were taking it seriously, but we were lacking some of the drive,'' Misaki said. ``I tried to take on some of the responsibility.''

Hart went from fourth to first to win its sixth consecutive Foothill title.

Misaki, 17, showed she's just as happy to let others shine when she went scoreless during the postseason, but she was important in opening opportunities for her teammates. The unseeded Indians tied Woodbridge in the final to give Hart a share of its first Southern Section championship.

``It was really special,'' Misaki said. ``It was so great to go out there and play as hard as I could and be rewarded like that. It's something we've wanted for a long time. Being a senior on top of that, it means a lot because it was my last chance. . . . I'm thoroughly satisfied.''
