HART, VALENCIA EYE SOFTBALL TOURNEY TITLE.

Three teams are shooting for division titles today in the 14-team Hart Classic softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  tournament.

In the Gold Division semifinals, where all four teams went undefeated in pool-play, Hart faces Highland at 9 a.m. at Newhall Park; Valencia takes on Westlake at Valencia High at 9 a.m.

The winners play in the title game at Newhall Park starting at 1 p.m. The losers play at 1 p.m. at Valencia High.

Hart beat El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Hart and Highland faced each other in a nonleague game Wednesday and the Indians won, 4-1.

Valencia and Westlake are two teams that haven't been scored on in the tournament. In the Silver Division semifinals, El Camino Real takes on Hoover at 9 a.m. at Hart High, while Santa Monica faces Quartz Hill at 9 a.m. at Valencia High.

The Silver finals are 1 p.m. at Valencia High. The two losers play at Hart High at 1 p.m.

El Camino Real is the defending City section champions. The Conquistadors' only win in the tournament came against Ventura, 11-0. Hoover beat Sylmar 3-0.

After its loss to Westlake, Quartz Hill bounced back to beat Canyon 4-0. Santa Monica slipped past Harvard-Westlake, 5-2 in its second game last week.

In the Bronze Division, both semifinals begin at 11 a.m. Ventura takes on Sylmar at Newhall Park, and Harvard-Westlake faces Canyon at Hart High.

The winner plays in the division final at 3 p.m. at Newhall Park.

In a consolation-bracket game, Monroe plays Granada Hills at Valencia High at 11 a.m. The winner faces the Ventura-Sylmar loser (jargon) loser - An unexpectedly bad situation, program, programmer, or person. Someone who habitually loses. (Even winners can lose occasionally). Someone who knows not and knows not that he knows not.  at 3 p.m. at Valencia High.

The loser of the Monroe-Granada Hills game plays the Harvard-Westlake-Canyon loser at 3 p.m. at Valencia.
