HART, CLINGING TO FIRST PLACE, OPTIMISTIC.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The Hart High boys' soccer team clings to a one-point lead in the Foothill League standings.

A 1-1 tie against second-place Burroughs of Burbank last Friday was the first time in the last 11 home games Hart did not come away with a win, and after this Friday, the Indians play the remainder of the regular season on the road.

In such a closely matched league, it won't take much for the defending champs to slip out of first, but the Indians (15-4-2, 4-1-1) are feeling more secure than ever.

The Indians' only league loss was to Burbank, the team Hart faces Friday. The Indians were without key defenders for the previous meeting, but Lindberg said his team ``wasn't really ready to play.'' Hart is 3-0-1 since its 4-0 loss to the Bulldogs.

``It was a good thing,'' Lindberg said of the loss. ``It woke us up.''

Burbank, meanwhile, has lost four straight since it beat the Indians.

--Season over: Hart senior forward Oscar Mendez is expected to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from hand surgery. He broke two bones in his hand last week in an accident at home and had surgery Saturday.

try to play with it, but I took a look at it, it was pretty bad,'' said Lindberg, who took Mendez to the hospital when he saw the severity of the injury.

--Last to get their first: The Valencia boys (8-6-5, 1-3-2) earned their first Foothill win of the season by overcoming a 2-0 halftime deficit against Burbank to defeat the Bulldogs 3-2 on Friday. Sean Summers scored two of the Vikings' goals to help the team that went 7-3-1 in nonleague play become the last team to get its first Foothill victory.

--Enjoying the whole thing: The spurts of solid play have been extended to cover entire games and move the Canyon girls into sole possession of second place.

``We're playing much better. We're playing better defensively and we're putting in longer efforts. Instead of playing just good halves, they're putting together back-to-back solid halves.''

Since giving up three goals in the first half of a loss to Hart, the Cowboys (14-5-2, 3-2-1) enter Friday's game at Burroughs having played what Cohen considers to be ``five consecutive good halves.''

Improved defense is allowing the offense to run more smoothly and juniors Nicole Norris and Vicky Duffy are making contributions in an offense that had relied heavily on sophomores Jaime Rendich and Natalie Sozio for its early-season production.

``The beginning of league, it seemed like we were nervous,'' Cohen said. ``We weren't focusing, we weren't doing what we're capable of doing.''

--Right on track: Despite his team's strong start and Hart's preseason struggles, when Valencia coach Tony Scalercio made his predictions at the start of league, he picked Hart to finish first, Canyon second and his Vikings third - the order in which the three now stand.

Valencia (13-4-2) has one loss each to Hart and Canyon and also has a tie against the Cowboys. Scalercio doesn't want to discount his team's ability, but because of the team's youth and the significant number of players who graduated from last season, he is looking to the future for his best results.

``Next year's my year,'' Scalercio said. ``Next year we'll contend for the title.

``Right now, we're a very young team, we make young mistakes.''
