HART, CANYON IN ELITE EIGHT.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON

The area will be well-represented at the first Cal-Hi Sports Elite Eight high school football passing tournament at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  on July 17, as both Hart and Canyon are scheduled to participate in a much-anticipated fest matching some of California's best teams.

The tournament figures to be yet another showcase for quarterbacks Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ...  of Canyon and Sean Norton of Hart, both considered among the best in the nation. Canyon, which has yet to lose a passing tournament this season, is 2-0 against Hart, beating the Indians at their own tournament and at the recent two-day Saugus tournament at Central Park.

Meanwhile, both teams are busy this weekend. Hart is participating Saturday in the competitive Edison High tournament in Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. It manufactures aerospace vehicles, aircraft parts, optical instruments, and heat transfer equipment. , while Canyon is playing in the annual Cal Lutheran tournament in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  on Friday and Saturday.

Hart's prime competition Saturday figures to be Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

, which defeated Hart in the Southern Section Div. II final last December, along with Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby. , which figures to be ranked among the nation's preseason top 10.

At Cal Lutheran, Canyon could see Westlake, led by high-profile quarterback Rudy Carpenter.

  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains

The B team (2-1), managed by Jim Wagner, needs two victories - beginning late Monday and at 5 tonight - against host Simi Valley Youth to win the District III championship.

In a 22-8 elimination victory Sunday, Corey Genovese was 4 for 4 with four RBI RBI

Meanwhile, Hart's Mustang team might have the best chance of anyone to advance to a World Series. The 9- and 10-year-olds, coached by Jeff Valaika (father of former Hart High standout Chris Valaika) blew away the competition to win the District II tournament at Santa Susana. The boys outscored four opponents 72-4, winning every game by the 10-run mercy rule A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule (or, less commonly, knockout rule and skunk rule), brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team.  including a 17-0 victory over Toluca in Sunday's final. The team has hit 14 home runs over the past two games.

--The biggest surprise of all in local youth baseball circles continues to be Castaic Little League. Since 1999, the team had never won a playoff game but the boys are 2-0 in the 12-team District 40 tournament, advancing to the winner's bracket semifinal against high-powered West Valley (2-0) at 5 p.m. today at Northridge Little League.

Castaic, led by outfielders Lion Sekona and Jonathan Maxey and first baseman Patrick Fuentes, needs two more victories in the double-elimination tournament to qualify for the Section 2 tournament in Rosamond next week.

--Several local baseball standouts plan to participate in the annual Goodwill Series in Australia, beginning Aug. 9. Donny Williams, 13, has signed on, along with 12-year-olds Jake Bernards, Anthony Hutting and Shawn Smith. All are from William S. Hart.

--In yet more youth baseball news, Hart's Pony team (13-year-olds) begins competition in the Sectionals against Sylmar at 5 p.m. Thursday at Simi Youth.

The team had a bye in the district tournament.

The marquee player is pitcher Spencer Smith, a 6-foot-2 right-hander who struck out 63 in 41 innings with a 3.04 ERA during the regular season. ``He's got all the tools,'' manager Pat Smith said.

Fellow right-hander Ryan Scherich is also one to watch. Among the top hitters are Aaron Olivas, Troy Ajer and Chris Metzner.

--Here's one for the just-wondering dept.: Whatever happened to the idea of baseball hitters choking up on the bat with two strikes?
