HARRIER ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO METABOLIC MEASUREMENT DEVICE

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Harrier, Inc. (NASDAQ: HARE) today announced the purchase, for an undisclosed amount of cash, notes and stock, of the exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture and market a unique hand-held device that will allow precise measurement of an individual's metabolic rate and daily caloric expenditure.
The device, known as a calorimeter, was invented by a physician with extensive experience in the field of nutrition and metabolism and is based on costly instruments used routinely in hospitals to determine the amount of nutritional support to provide to patients. With this license agreement, which includes multiple issued and pending U.S. patents, Harrier will pioneer the introduction of the metabolic measurement device for the consumer market.
This calorimeter, currently under final development, will be a hand- held instrument consisting of a small microprocessor and a disposable breathing cartridge. By breathing through the cartridge for a period of only a few minutes, the instrument will measure an individual's actual metabolic rate and caloric expenditure. This information can then be used to accurately guide the amount of calories to eat in order to lose, maintain, or gain weight.
Kevin DeVito, president of Harrier, stated: "We anticipate several large markets for this hand-held calorimeter. It is well-known that every person has a slightly different metabolism that relates to age, gender, body size, and a number of other factors. As a result, it has been difficult or impossible to know one's own, individual metabolic rate outside of a hospital. Weight management is a multibillion-dollar industry that exists for home products, weight-loss clinics, and health and fitness centers. In each of these settings, a hand-held calorimeter will offer the first opportunity to individualize a personal diet plan according to daily measurements of the actual number of calories burned. Harrier plans to target each of these market sectors through an aggressive consumer marketing plan," Mr. DeVito said.
Current efforts by Harrier are focused on final design and development of the commercial calorimeter product. Introduction to the consumer market is anticipated for the third quarter of 1993.
