HARRAH'S TO PROCEED WITH DOCKSIDE CASINO IN TUNICA COUNTY MISSISSIPPI - OPENING TARGETED TO FOURTH QUARTER 1993 -

MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Harrah's, the casino entertainment division of The Promus Companies (NYSE: PRI), today announced plans for a dockside casino project in Tunica County, Mississippi, approximately 20 miles south of Memphis. Harrah's has signed an agreement to lease approximately 150 acres to develop the complex just five miles west of Highway 61, a 30-minute drive from downtown Memphis.
Recently the site was granted final site plan approval for dockside casino development by the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
Harrah's will be a 75 percent general partner in the project, with Belz Enterprises of Memphis holding a 25 percent interest in the $49 million facility.
The proposed Harrah's Casino Tunica dockside facility will feature 32,100 square feet of casino entertainment space with 1,460 slot machines and 54 table games. An additional 11,600 square feet of interior passenger space will feature beverage and entertainment services for the guests.
In addition to the dockside building, an approximate 30,000 square foot shoreside facility will feature a 255-seat restaurant, retail space and a lounge.
Parking for approximately 1,300 cars will be adjacent to the casino. The project will maintain its own self-contained power and sewage plants.
A barge has already been moved to the site and construction will begin in early June on the dockside and shore facilities. Harrah's Casino Tunica could open late in the fourth quarter of 1993.
"We are very excited to be proceeding with a casino entertainment facility so close to our Memphis corporate home," said Michael D. Rose, chairman and chief executive officer of Promus. "We look forward to building and operating a world class facility that all of our employees in Memphis and around the Mid-South can be proud of. When completed, we expect Harrah's Tunica County to attract over 1.5 million visitors annually."
As the largest city along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and St. Louis, the nearly 1 million person Memphis metropolitan area will serve as the primary feeder market for Harrah's Casino Tunica. "Memphis has established a growing tourism market with such attractions as Graceland, the Great American Pyramid, the Memphis Zoo and the world acclaimed Wonders Series," Rose added. "We expect our Harrah's casino entertainment complex to become a valuable addition to that entertainment package."
Little Rock, Arkansas, and Nashville, Tennessee, are approximately a three hour drive from the proposed Harrah's site.
Based on preliminary estimates, the casino entertainment project is expected to create approximately 150 local temporary construction jobs and more than 800 full-time jobs once the complex is open.
The project is subject to receipt of a Mississippi gaming license and other regulatory and governmental approvals.
Harrah's, the premier name in casino entertainment opens its first riverboat casino in Joliet, Illinois, this evening. Additional projects are under development in Vicksburg, Mississippi; North Kansas City, Missouri; and Shreveport, Louisiana.
Harrah's is the only casino entertainment company operating in all five major U.S. gaming markets: Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Laughlin and Reno, Nevada.
The Promus Companies Incorporated also owns and operates three leading hotel brands: Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites hotels.
