HARMON CONTRACT BUYS FRENCH CONTRACTOR; COMBINATION EXPANDS CURTAINWALL EXPERTISE IN EUROPEAN MARKET

MINNEAPOLIS, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Harmon Contract, a division of Apogee Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: APOG) a Minneapolis-based industry leader in the fabrication, installation and distribution of glass and aluminum, has acquired substantially all of the assets and backlog of one of Europe's leading curtainwall contracting firms. Harmon is the largest designer and installer of curtainwall and window systems in the United States.
Acquired was CFEM Fasades, a prestigious French company whose $50 million of pending projects include the Bibliotheque de France and the Credit Lyonnais structure at the head of the Eurotunnel connecting France and the United Kingdom. Both are scheduled to be completed next spring. CFEM was responsible for the sloped glazing and curtainwalls on such Paris landmarks as the Pyramide du Louvre, La Grande Arche and Opera Bastille.
"We're enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring CFEM and its 110 employees into our group of specialty construction companies," said Gary W. Haider, Harmon president. "CFEM shares the same kind of technical and project management focus that has made our group the provider of choice for many architects and general contractors, and the acquisition demonstrates our strong commitment to the European market."
In the United Kingdom, Harmon's new construction projects include the Doolittle Meadows Phase III office building and the Little Britain office complex. The James Capel project and The Fitzwilliam House are among its U.K. rehab projects. The division also has installations in Asia.
The purchase of CFEM provides Harmon with expertise in European construction techniques and approximately 500,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities. Becoming a European manufacturer of curtainwall and other building components "is a major strategic step for us," Haider said.
Haider noted that European developers are showing increased interest in high-rise structures such as those typically seen in U.S. metropolitan areas. As a consequence, the growth of high-rise construction in Europe has attracted many American construction and contracting firms, he said.
Harmon had operated CFEM according to the terms of a bankruptcy court order granted April 6, since which time the company had been in negotiation with the court regarding prices and contracts. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The combined company will operate throughout Europe under the name Harmon/CFEM Fasades S.A.
