HARBOR FETE PAYS TRIBUTE TO KING : CROWD SHOWS SUPPORT DURING HOLIDAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION.

Powell joined a crowd of shoppers and tourists Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  afternoon for the fourth annual birthday observation concert series at Ventura Harbor Village. The free concerts included jazz bassist Sammy Franklin and the four-piece Motown band Blue Moon.

``It's an occasion for people to celebrate something that they maybe won't say out loud,'' said Blue Moon singer James Pasley. ``But by showing up here, they express it.''

There were no speeches or banners or songs, but the mix of people on hand demonstrated principles that King fought and died for, said Jeff Klein Klein , Melanie 1882-1960.

``Look around you,'' Klein said. ``There's a whole mix of people. That's worth something. King had an important dream that needs rekindling every once in a while.''

One passer-by said the newest national holiday has already begun to lose its significance.

``This is great and fun, but I wish there was more emphasis on what the man stood for,'' said Sharon Kreiser, who visited the harbor with her husband, Ed, on a day trip from Bakersfield. ``King stood for the dignity and humanity. I think sometimes that gets lost. Then it becomes just another chance to have a sale.''
