HALE, REED MIDDLE SCHOOLS MAKE STATE LIST.

Two San Fernando Valley middle schools were among 157 secondary schools statewide honored Tuesday as California Distinguished Schools by the state Department of Education.

George Ellery Hale Middle School in Woodland Hills and Walter Reed Middle School Walter Reed Middle School is a year-round school located in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. Its original name was North Hollywood Junior High School.

The school is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
 in North Hollywood achieved the award because of their high academic achievements as well as parent, community and staff dedication.

The honor is ``kind of like winning the gold medal in the Olympics,'' said Ed Pardo, spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. . ``It's an extremely high honor and it's something that can never be taken away from you.''

The two schools were the only ones in the LAUSD to receive the award this year.

Other northern Los Angeles County area schools honored include Castaic Middle School in the Castaic Union Elementary School District, Eleanor J. Toll Middle School in the Glendale Unified School District The Glendale Unified School District is a school district based in Glendale, California, United States.

The school district serves the city of Glendale, portions of the city of La CaƱada and the unincorporated communities of Montrose and La Crescenta.
, New Vista Middle School in the Lancaster School District, and Boron and Desert junior-senior high schools in the Muroc Joint Unified School District.

Seven Ventura County schools also were named: Colina Middle School and Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. It is a California Distinguished School, and offers curriculum at all levels for Thousand Oaks students. The mascot is the lancer.  in the Conejo Valley Unified School District Conejo Valley Unified School District or CVUSD is a school district in Ventura County. It serves Thousand Oaks, California and its subsections Newbury Park and Westlake Village. , Chaparral Middle School in the Moorpark Unified School District, Los Altos Middle School in the Pleasant Valley School District Pleasant Valley School District is a school district in the west end of Monroe County, Pennsylvania in the United States. Enrollment for the district has reached around seven thousand students. , Sinaloa Middle School in the Simi Valley Unified School District, and Balboa Middle School and Ventura High School in the Ventura Unified School District.

The state also announced 49 California schools nominated for a National Blue Ribbon award this year. The list of nominees includes Canoga Park's Welby Way Elementary School, Cypress and University elementary schools in the Conejo Valley Unified, Stevenson Ranch Elementary School in the Newhall Elementary School District, and Oak Hills Elementary in the Oak Park Unified School District Oak Park Unified School District (OPUSD) is a K-12 school district in southeast Ventura County, California, USA. It consists of six public schools in the community of Oak Park. .

The distinguished schools and Blue Ribbon nominees will be recognized at an awards ceremony May 11 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
