``It's very important for us,'' Hahn said. ``It's an excellent opportunity for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  businesses.''

Under the deal, Los Angeles and Beijing will open a trade office in the other's city, collaborate on construction projects and generally tap the experience Los Angeles has in hosting Olympic Games, which it did in 1984.

Lee Harrington, president of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp., said that while the agreements are vaguely worded - calling simply for ``extensive discussions'' of the issues - they are likely to reap tangible benefits when Beijing awards construction contracts for the Olympic Games and decides which businesses can set up shop in the new airport.

``What this will do is to give Los Angeles businesses a little bit of an edge in getting that work,'' Harrington said.

Late Wednesday, Hahn signed a nonbinding agreement with Beijing Mayor Liu Qi in a formal ceremony attended by a phalanx phalanx, ancient Greek formation of infantry. The soldiers were arrayed in rows (8 or 16), with arms at the ready, making a solid block that could sweep bristling through the more dispersed ranks of the enemy.  of Los Angeles city officials and members of the 2008 Olympic Organizing Committee. It was held in a posh penthouse banquet hall overlooking a brightly illuminated neon strip that winds through the center of this city of 13 million people.

Hahn said earlier that doing business with China requires establishing relationships, and the deals signed on this $500,000 trip are merely the first step.

Hahn also had been scheduled to meet privately today with China's president, Jiang Zemin, but the session had to be canceled. Jiang asked for a one-day delay in their meeting, but Hahn had to leave for Tokyo, where he and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger have scheduled a news conference for today to promote tourism in Los Angeles.

``Of course, we'd like to meet with President Jiang, but we understand his schedule is extremely busy,'' said Hahn's spokeswoman, Julie Wong, adding that the session with Jiang had been scheduled so the two officials could simply meet.

Many of the businessmen along on the trip have said the access to government officials via the delegation will be invaluable in the future.

``We're already doing business in China, but this helps enhance the relationship,'' said Jack Baylis, head of the Los Angeles office for the engineering firm CHIMHill, one of some four dozen Los Angeles business people accompanying on a 10-day, four-country Asia trade and tourism mission.

On Wednesday, Hahn and Chinese wildlife officials committed to a long-term agreement that includes the loan of golden monkeys to the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.
