James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California

statistics,'' Hahn said during his monthly ``Ask the Mayor'' radio show on KFWB-AM (980). ``Crime is down across the city. In every area of the city. Crime is down 18 percent. No, we haven't finished the job yet, but we are making progress.''

Hahn's remarks were in response to information posted on the Web site of the former Assembly speaker, one of the leading challengers to Hahn's re-election next year.

On his Web site, www.changela.com, Hertzberg showed a map of the city that detailed increases in crime in various communities and questioned the mayor's record.

``This is just an example of negative campaigning Negative campaigning is trying to win an advantage by referring to negative aspects of an opponent or of a policy rather than emphasizing one's own positive attributes or preferred policies.  and taking something positive and putting a negative spin on it,'' Hahn said. ``The fact is that crime is down throughout the city.''

Even though Police Chief William Bratton recently acknowledged that the city's homicide homicide (hŏm`əsīd), in law, the taking of human life. Homicides that are neither justifiable nor excusable are considered crimes. A criminal homicide committed with malice is known as murder, otherwise it is called manslaughter.  rate was still a problem and that the city would not see the reduction in killings it had anticipated, Hahn said there was progress.

``We went down to record lows and while it's not as low as we would like, we aren't seeing the increases of past years,'' Hahn said.

Hertzberg spokesman Matt Szabo, however, said the numbers developed for the Web site came from the LAPD.

``We used the most recent numbers broken down by neighborhoods to give people access to information so they can make up their own mind,'' Szabo said.

``We don't think providing information to the public is negative. We want to get voters engaged and accessing government.''
