HACKETT SOARS INTO STATE FINALS; VERDUGO HILLS POLE VAULTER HITS CAREER BEST.

Shane Hackett of Verdugo Hills High started the season with a flourish and put himself in position to end his season in similar fashion Friday.

Hackett, the defending City champion, equaled the mark at the Eagle Rock Relays in March but has not been over 15 feet since.

``It is a big boost to finally go over 15-0 and gave the confidence I am going to need in the finals,'' Hackett said. ``Everybody is so close. It is going to be a real dogfight.''

Jackson, the state leader at 24-4-3/4, rebounded from his first defeat of the season at the Masters Meet last Friday. The junior passed on his third jump after posting a wind-aided 24-0 on his first attempt and 24-1-1/2 on his second. Jackson and Robert Kennedy of Sacramento El Camino, the No. 2 qualifier at 24-1, are the only qualifiers over 24-0.

Bussey, the state 400-leader and all-time area record-holder at 46.3, and anchored Taft's 1,600 relay to victory in 3:19.58. Teammate Chris Morgan Chris Morgan is the name of:

 Smith, Erin Reed and Trisha Bratford on the Toreadors' 1,600 relay, which finished second in its heat to qualify at 3:51.12.
