Despite the scoring drought, Carlson was able to find the net twice in the fourth period Thursday to spark Harvard-Westlake to a 9-3 victory over visiting Charter Oak of Covina in a Southern Section Div. ``It feels really good to get this first win,'' Carlson said. ``We have five juniors and two seniors on our team so we have a lot of time to grow as a team. We are just concentrating on winning our games.''

--Crescenta Valley 9, St. Lucy's 6: Host Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  trailed 4-1 heading into third quarter but rallied behind sophomore Kristin McLaughlin to advance to Saturday's second round against top-seeded Temple City at a site to be determined.

McLaughlin, a sophomore, scored three of her five goals during a a four-minute stretch of the final quarter and netted what proved to be the game-winner at the 3:52 mark.

Teammate Megan Martin added two goals for the Falcons (19-9).

The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Valley Park to advance in to the second round.

The Highlanders (20-7) established themselves quickly, scoring three times within the first minute with two point-blank shots the shot of a gun pointed directly toward the object to be hit.

Royal took a five-goal lead after the first quarter.

``We've had trouble starting out quickly before, so it's good to come out and get started in our first playoff game,'' Royal coach Devin Hurst said.

Santa Ynez (11-16) had three goals in the second period and Royal had four for a 10-4 advantage at the half. Royal shut out Santa Ynez in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Brandy Creek stopped 16 shots. Harding and Melissa Dicato had five goals, along with help from Christina Cruz (five goals) and Angie Rampton (two goals).
