Lesbians of the world, what gives? Gwyneth Paltrow says she was never hit on by a woman, even at Vassar, where "everyone became a lesbian, at least for a year.... Have you at least played a lesbian?

No, but I have to. My cousin [Katherine Moennig] is on The L Word, so maybe I could get it in there.

You did do a little cross-dressing in Shakespeare in Love.

That's true. I had this beanbag that I put in my shorts so I would know what it feels like to have a pee-pee.

How big a beanbag are we talking here?

It wasn't that impressive. It was just a regular old beanbag. But it was very helpful.

You play a mathematician's daughter who struggles with her sanity in Proof, a role you also played on the London stage.

What appealed to you about the role?

It's so juicy and complicated. In Hollywood these clays everything is like a comic book, so when you read something challenging and smart like Proof, it's like a miracle. And there were lots of parallels to my own life. I was doing it after my father had died, and I was playing a girl whose father had died.

You were pregnant with your daughter, Apple, while you were shooting.

Yes. I felt all the things you feel when you're first pregnant. I was tired and nauseous and working 14-hour days. That's why I was so glad I had done the play because the lines were imprinted on my brain. I couldn't have done any other movie, being pregnant.

Apple is 16 months old now, Has she been to a Coldplay concert yet?

She's been to sound checks, but the shows are usually past her bedtime. When music is on at home, she absolutely loves it She sees a guitar lying around and says "Dada!"

You're a bit of a fashion icon. I hear there are a lot of gay people in the fashion industry.

Really? No. [Laughs]

How does it feel to have people analyzing what you wear all the time?

I try not to think about it; [or] I'd be paralyzed choosing an outfit, t really love clothing. It's kind of an artistic statement that you make every day, even if you're working in an office.

If you could be anonymous for a day, what would you do?

Probably go to Disneyland with my daughter. Or what's the name of that water park? Raging Waters.

If someone gave you a voodoo doll that represented the paparazzi, would you use it?

Definitely.

I hear you're an '80s pop culture junkie.

I was in the dentist's chair the other day, and St. Elmo's Fire was on the little TV. I thought, I can't believe I'm watching this here. I'm so happy.
