Gunshot kills Eugene man.

CORRECTION (ran June 27, 2007): An article on Page D2 Tuesday misstated the year Weston Schoener graduated. He graduated from South Eugene High School South Eugene High School is a public high school located in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It was founded as Eugene High School around 1900, and was located at Willamette Street and West 11th Avenue in a brick building that later served as Eugene's city hall.  in 2004.

The victim, Weston Schoener, was in a group of four friends who'd been out on Munsel Lake in a small boat. They returned to a private dock about 9:30 p.m., police said.

The group was separated as they walked from the dock to a private residence. Schoener and one friend were walking on the dock while the other two went ahead.

A small-caliber rifle carried by one of the men on the path ahead discharged, police said. A bullet struck Schoener in the back, near the waist. Police were trying to determine if the shooting was accidental accidental /ac·ci·den·tal/ (ak?si-den´t'l)

, state police Lt. Gregg Hastings said.

"That might be the initial take, but we can't be closed minded to any other possible scenarios," Hastings said.

Hastings said he didn't know if the young men had been drinking.

When medical personnel arrived, Schoener's friends were administrating first aid. He died during surgery at Peace Harbor Hospital.

Schoener graduated from South Eugene High in 2003.
