Gun laws targeted.

A CITY councillor has called for compulsory training for people wanting firearms licences.

Progressive Democrats councillor Tim O'Malley yesterday urged the Justice Minister to introduce a test of elementary training.

The Limerick councillor said: "There are 200,000 gun licences in Ireland and it is extremely worrying that anybody who applies for a licence does not have to prove competence in the use of firearms."

He wants the test to cover how to load, clean, use and carry a firearm safely.

One in every 18 people have a firearms licence.
