Gull announces flight inspection contract with Italian Government Agency.SMITHTOWN, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 1995--Gull Electronic System Division of Parker Bertea Aerospace today announced receipt of a one million dollar plus contract to upgrade the Automatic Flight Inspection Systems (AFIS AFIS Automated Fingerprint Identification System AFIS Aerodrome Flight Information Service AFIS Armed Forces Radio and Television Service AFIS Airborne Flight Information System AFIS Automated Fingerprinting Identification System (Pakistan) ) in two Cessna Citation The Cessna Citation is a marketing name used by Cessna for its lines of business jets. Rather than one particular model of aircraft, the name applies to several "families" of turbofan-powered aircraft which have been produced over the years. II aircraft belonging to Azienda Autonoma Assistenza al Volo (AAAV AAAV Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (USMC) AAAV Association of African American Vintners ), the Italian Government agency responsible for air navigation facility inspection. The equipment, which automates the inspection and calibration of en route air navigation aids and precision landing systems, was originally supplied by Gull in 1985. The project will bring the Italian AFIS capabilities up to the advanced level of the United States FAA Flight Inspection Systems supplied by Gull. The FAA is presently operating more than thirty flight inspection aircraft equipped with the Gull AFIS. Specifically Gull will: o Replace the existing mechanical gyro inertial reference units (IRU Iru (ī`r ), in the Bible, Caleb's eldest son. ) with modern ring laser gyro IRU's. o Install Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite. Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use. (GPS) receivers. o Replace magnetic tape units with Gull's high density removable hard disk (storage) removable hard disk - A type of magnetic disk, or possibly magneto-optical disk which is not permanently attached to the disk drive (not a fixed disk) but which can be taken out and replaced, allowing many disks to be used in the same drive. drives for program loading and data recording. o Update the Gull Navigation Computer Unit hardware and software. o Supply new ground support equipment to generate navigation facility databases and perform post flight data analysis and archiving. Gull will perform all aircraft modification and equipment installation at Rome's Ciampino Airport. Flight tests of the improved system are scheduled to begin in January 1996.
