Guinness PLC to sell wine interest

As part of its strategy of focusing on the group's core interests in brewing and spirits, Guinness PLC announced its intentions to sell off its majority holding in Bodegas AGE, the company's Spanish Rioja wine business.

Bodegas AGE is one of the three Rioja houses and is the leading exporter of Rioja wine, according to a Guinness spokesman. The company produces a variety of Rioja wine brands such as Siglo Saco and Romeral, and a smaller volume of Gran Reservas.

The major brand, Siglo Saco, with its famous hessian-covered bottle, is exported throughout the world. In 1989, Bodgegas AGE sold over one million cases of Rioja wine.

Guinness obtained a 51-percent interest in Bodegas AGE in 1987 when it acquired Schenley Industries Inc. in the United States.
