For teachers of grades three through eight, reading specialists, literacy coaches, and others, McLaughlin and Allen (reading education, East Stroudsburg U. of Pennsylvania) offer a guide to teaching students to become active, strategic readers through a comprehension-based perspective using guided comprehension techniques: providing explicit strategy instruction, opportunities for engagement, and a multiple levels and types of texts and instructional settings. The theoretical framework and principles of guided comprehension are first discussed, including assessment, followed by 16 lesson plans on biography/autobiography, identity, poetry, and fantasy. Suggestions for teaching English learners are included. The book combines Guided Comprehension: A Teaching Model for Grades 3-8 and Guided Comprehension in Action: Lessons for Grades 3-8 into one volume. This edition has all new lessons, ideas for differentiating instruction, new theme resources, and new examples of student work. Appendices with teaching ideas, prompts, resources, and forms have been revised.
