Usually it involves artificial pacemakers and/or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy as well as antiarrhythmia drugs.  systems, today announced the first implant of the PULSAR(TM) MAX pacemaker system.

Manufactured by Guidant's Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM (Customer Relationship Management) An integrated information system that is used to plan, schedule and control the presales and postsales activities in an organization. ) Group, the new device provides sophisticated adaptive-rate algorithms designed to match the pacing rate provided by the PULSAR MAX to individual patient needs. The PULSAR MAX offers the physician a choice of three sensor-based options: an accelerometer that measures patient movement, a minute ventilation sensor that measures patient respiration or an optimized blend of input from both sensors.

"This implant of the PULSAR MAX system launches Guidant into the sophisticated arena of dual-sensor pacing systems," noted Jay Graf, president of Guidant's CRM Group. "This new product offers a physiologic response to normal variations in a patient's daily activity," Graf said. "Further, PULSAR MAX will store and display diagnostic-quality atrial and ventricular electrograms simultaneously. This diagnostic feature, called arrhythmia logbook, is unmatched by any competitive pacing system available today," Graf added.

The first implant of the PULSAR MAX took place Monday at the Polyclinic polyclinic /poly·clin·ic/ (-klin´ik) a hospital and school where diseases and injuries of all kinds are studied and treated.

 and supraventricular ventricular tachycardia.

The PULSAR MAX device includes Guidant's newest ease-of-use features - Quick Start(TM), Quick Check(TM) and Quick Notes(TM), which allow the clinician to easily and quickly perform a comprehensive set of automatic tests and follow-up device operations. The result is a printout that summarizes data needed for informed patient management in one concise report. The system can be programmed using the Model 2901 Programmer/Recorder/Monitor (PRM) for quick, intuitive programming and follow-up of patients.
