     and a pioneer in the application of information technology for social and economic development, will deliver the keynote address at the 2002 Marconi Fellowship Award Dinner, Thursday, Nov. 7, in honor of Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.

    Professor Pal, the 1980 Marconi International Fellow, will speak about the role of the World Wide Web in building an inclusive world. As the founder and first director of the Space Applications Centre at Ahmedabad, Professor Pal was responsible for an innovative socio-technical experiment on the use of satellite-based direct television broadcast for education and development of a few thousand of the most remote villages in India.

    Presented annually by the Guglielmo Marconi International Fellowship at Columbia University, the Marconi Fellowship recognizes individuals whose endeavors, careers, and accomplishments in communications technology emulate those of Guglielmo Marconi -- scientist, engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 as an Internet-based hypermedia hypermedia: see hypertext.


    The use of hyperlinks, regular text, graphics, audio and video to provide an interactive, multimedia presentation. All the various elements are linked, enabling the user to move from one to another.
