brought civil rights claims seeking damages from correctional officers, alleging they used excessive force and left him in a "restraint" chair for prolonged periods. The district court entered judgment against a Captain for $1,500 on the restraint chair claim and against another officer for $500 on the excessive force claim. The district court refused to award punitive damages Monetary compensation awarded to an injured party that goes beyond that which is necessary to compensate the individual for losses and that is intended to punish the wrongdoer.  and the detainee appealed. The appeals court affirmed, finding that the district court's refusal to award punitive damages was not an abuse of discretion. The inmate had alleged that during his first six days of detention he was subjected to unprovoked beatings and was placed in a "torture chair" for long periods.
