Guangdong Eastern Fibernet Company Selects Lucent Technologies for Optical Backbone Construction.

Lucent Technologies today announced that it has won two contracts in China to provide Lucent's industry-leading optical networking solutions to Guangdong Eastern Fibernet Company (GEFC). Lucent's solutions will be used for the expansion of GEFC's Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks in Guangdong Province. Shanghai Tiantong Telecommunications Equipment Co., LTD, a Lucent Business Partner, has provided pre-sales support on both projects and will deliver the equipment to GEFC.

Lucent's next-generation optical networking systems, will enable GEFC to construct a reliable, high-speed network and offer its customers new services over the broadband network.

For the project, LambdaUnite(R) MSSs will be deployed to form the core ring of the SDH network in the cities of Guangzhou, JiangMmn and Shenzhen. This will connect the metro rings formed by the Metropolis(R) ADM in Zhaoqing, Zhanjiang, Jieyang, Shantou and Huizhou. Lucent also will deploy the WaveStar(R) ITM-SC network management system to help GEFC smoothly integrate Lucent's hardware into its existing SDH network. The WaveStar(R) OLS 1.6Tand Metropolis(R) EON will be deployed in the major cities of Guangdong province, to efficiently manage broadband traffic growth and provide high-quality data services to GEFC's customers.

Metropolis(R) ADM serves as an integrated Ethernet-over-SDH multiplexer, enabling service providers to migrate from existing time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks to data-aware packet networks. Adding data services to optical networks increases revenue potential for customers and helps them offer a wide variety of new Ethernet services. Metropolis (R) ADM integrates seamlessly into GEFC's existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for an overlay network built for new services. Developed by Bell Labs, Lucent's R&D arm, the WaveStar(R) OLS 1.6T system is an ultra-high-capacity DWDM system that offers up to 160 10-Gb/s wavelengths for a total capacity of 1.6 Tb/s on one fiber - the equivalent of transmitting 320 million one-page e-mails per second.
