The award of the contract for construction is expected in Summer 2005 and completion of the project is projected for Summer 2008, increasing efficiency for thousands of passengers and NYCT staff.

Gruzen Samton's designs will expand the station to accommodate an increased number of customers and comply with new NYCT program requirements.

Upgrades include the reconfiguration of the fare control Fare control is the system to make sure that people, e.g. in a train station, pay their fare.

A fare control area can be an area at an entrance or exit with turnstiles or fare gates, or alternatively the area between the turnstiles and the tracks; on proof-of-payment
zone, reconstruction of an existing street entrance, expansion of the mezzanine area and the addition of three elevators, making the station fully accessible to the disabled.

Incorporated into the plans is a new consolidated facility for NYCT staff, which will be located in a unique double high space that exists over the platforms, adjacent to the mezzanine.

The offices will have windows that will allow staff members to look out onto the station. The facility will also provide employees with access to the subway, 24-hours a day. Gruzen Samton's design will restore the station's 87-year-old historic finishes and add new flooring and lighting.

"We are excited to be part of the restoration as this historic subway enters its second century of use," said Dominick DeAngelis, senior associate of Gruzen Samton Architects. "The work of our design team will enhance the experience of the thousands of passengers who pass through the facility daily."

The station was originally opened in 1918 as part of the southern extension of the West Side IRT.
