Gruzen Samton Architects win Times Square contract.


Gruzen Samton, in a joint venture with DMJM DMJM Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall (architecture, engineering, and construction services firm) +Harris, has been awarded the design of the third and final phase of the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Times Square and Grand Central Shuttle Stations by the MTA (1) (Message Transfer Agent or Mail Transfer Agent) The store and forward part of a messaging system. The $80-million project will completely reconstruct the Times Square Shuttle Station, including track alignment and train operations that will necessitate the removal of the existing radial plan and associated gap fillers; simplification of customer circulation, access, and wayfinding; new staircases connecting the station to the street; and overall customer ambiance am·bi·ance also am·bi·ence

The special atmosphere or mood created by a particular environment: "The noir ambience is dominated by low-key lighting . . .
 with regard to the visual environment and comfort levels. Other focuses of the redesign will be the restoration of the historic features from the original Times Square Station, built in 1904. At the Grand Central Shuttle Station, platforms will be lengthened to accommodate five car trains.
