Groupe Sagem Announces Voice-Fax-Modem Software Upgrade for Planet ISDN Product Line; Licenses Suite of Communications Applications from Apple Computer for Easier Faxing, Telephone and Personal Business Management for the Small Office/Home Office and Telecommuters.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1997--Groupe Sagem, a high technology group and a leading supplier of ISDN ISDN
in full Integrated Services Digital Network

Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media.
and videoconferencing products for Macintosh environments, today announced a voice-fax-modem software upgrade for its Sagem Planet ISDN product line.

Sagem has licensed Apple Telecom 3.1 Software which provides voice-fax-modem capabilities from Apple Computer, Inc. and adapted the software interface for use with Sagem's ISDN products. The voice-fax-modem upgrade will be used with the Sagem Planet ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network Integrated services digital network (ISDN)

) cards, the GeoPort ISDN telecommunications adapter Kit and Meet-Me videoconferencing boards for the Macintosh computer. The upgrade includes software enhancements for easier faxing, phoning and personal business management for users operating in a small office/home office See SOHO.  (SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent. ) or telecommuters.

For the first time, users of Mac OS-based systems that use ISDN may send faxes to and receive faxes from an analog fax machine at 14.4 Kbps as well as exchange files with analog modem users at 33.6 Kbps. Previously, ISDN users had to purchase a separate analog fax machine or modem to communicate with others using analog devices. With the new upgrade, ISDN users may also connect to an Internet service provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.

(2) (Internet Service Provider) An organization that provides access to the Internet. Connection to the user is provided via dial-up, ISDN, cable, DSL and T1/T3 lines.
) that does not support ISDN.

The new voice-fax-modem software upgrade adds an intelligent full-duplex speakerphone, digital answering machine, fax capability and high-speed modem. The increased all-in-one functionality is available through Sagem's licensing of Apple Telecom 3.1, an integrated suite of communications applications, from Apple Computer.

Telecom 3.1 includes: AppleFax, for sending and receiving faxes directly from your computer; Apple Phone, a simple and powerful speakerphone and telephone answering machine; and Apple AddressBook, a single integrated telephone and address book that works with both AppleFax and Apple Phone.

"We are pleased to work with Apple to provide telephony solutions that our customers have requested for improved fax communications and file exchange," said Marc Mathieu, executive vice president, Sagem. "The new offering is a cost-effective way for the small office/home office worker and telecommuter using ISDN to seamlessly communicate with others using analog or digital lines."

"The combination of Apple Telecom 3.1 software and Sagem's Planet ISDN GeoPort Adapter provides a powerful faxing and telephony solution for users without having to sacrifice speed or increase costs," said Jim Gable, vice president of Apple Platform and Technology Marketing.

Sagem Planet ISDN Products

The Sagem Planet ISDN products with Apple Telecom 3.1 software require a PowerPC-based Macintosh computer and 8MB or more of memory. Sagem ISDN products are compatible with standard protocols including Transparent, HDLC (High-level Data Link Control) A data link protocol from ISO for point-to-point communications over serial links. Derived from IBM's SDLC protocol, HDLC has been the basis for numerous protocols including X.25, ISDN, T1, SS7, GSM, CDPD, PPP and others. , PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , MLPPP See MPPP. , LAPB LAPB - Link Access Protocol Balanced  (X.75), X.25 EuroFile, X.25 64K or X.25-MLP 128K, enabling it to exchange data with other types of ISDN cards.

Sagem also offers internal ISDN cards and an external ISDN adapter that works with any Macintosh computer with an 68020 or greater processor for fast digital connections.

The analog functions of the voice-fax-modem software upgrade use a single B-channel, leaving the second B-channel of the ISDN line for simultaneous, high-speed data transfers or Internet connections.

Sagem offers a full range of ISDN and videoconferencing solutions for the Macintosh computer -- the Planet-ISDN product line (NuBus and PCI cards, the Planet-ISDN GeoPort Adapter) and the Meet-Me H.320 videoconferencing product line (Meet-Me Light, Meet-Me Mac NuBus and PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.
