Group lobbies to stop trash from crossing border.


Detroit residents are not the only Americans howling about Canadian trash ending up in their backyard.

Tri-County Pollution Control announced it is launching an aggressive lobbying campaign to stop Waste Management Inc., the Houston, TX-based owner of the landfill, from accepting Canadian garbage garbage: see solid waste. .

Tri-County says they have recently learned that Waste Management was planning to begin delivering two or three transfer loads of household trash per day from the Sudbury area to the Dafter landfill. The first shipments were scheduled to arrive as early as Mar. 15. Tri-County president Annie Goetz says the "two-per-cent increase in Michigan's trash in 2003 pales in comparison to the 35 per cent increase of Canadian trash imports in the same year."
