The $7.4 million development is innovative for several reasons. Habitat for Humanity will build three barrier-free homes for people with accessibility limitations. The project also showcases a wide range of green design strategies. The homes developed by Rose Companies are all modular and were designed by a leading green building architect, Steven Winter Associates of Norwalk, CT. Landscape architect Lee Weintraub designed the neighborhood as an intimate tree-lined street with traditional homes and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks. The new lane is named Frances Hunter Drive in memory of a community activist who helped spearhead the revitalization plans for the Elm Haven neighborhood. To ensure that people of all income levels have the opportunity to qualify to buy a new home, the New Haven Homeownership Center is providing pre- and post-homeownership counseling services. The two-story homes will have front porches that create a sense of community along the street, and will be constructed with basements and garages.
