Ground blessed for LCC longhouse.

Byline: MARK BAKER The Register-Guard

On a day when many were looking back, a group of people gathered Wednesday at Lane Community College to look forward.

"On this day, when the memories are particularly grim, it's so wonderful to have a project like this to kick off," LCC (Leadless Chip Carrier, Leaded Chip Carrier) See leadless chip carrier, CLCC and PLCC.

 President Mary Spilde said.

The project is the Lane Native American Longhouse longhouse

Traditional communal dwelling of the Iroquois Indians until the 19th century. The longhouse was a rectangular box built out of poles, with doors at each end and saplings stretched over the top to form the roof, the whole structure being covered with bark.
. About 100 tribal elders, students, staff members and others attended a blessing of the ground on the northwest side of the college, where school officials plan to build the $800,000 longhouse.

They banged drums and sang Native American songs and burned cedar to cleanse the area.

"I want to build an Indian program that will represent all the people," said Frank Merrill Frank Dow Merrill (born December 4, 1903 in New Hampshire – died December 11, 1955 in Fernandina Beach, Florida) is best remembered for his command of Merrill's Marauders, officially the 5307th Composite Unit (provisional), in the Burma Campaign of World War II. , coordinator of LCC's Native American Student Association and a member of the Karuk Indian tribe INDIAN TRIBE. The longhouse would be a gathering spot for all students to learn about Native American culture as well as to provide additional classroom space for the college.

More than 250 Native American students attend LCC, Merrill said, and there are another 350 or so who identify themselves as being part Native American.

The college has about 10 classes on Native American culture and language, Merrill said.

"Many (Native American) students, when they get here are intimidated and drop out," said Jerry Hall Jerry Faye Hall (born July 2, 1956 in Gonzales, Texas) is an American supermodel and actress known for being Mick Jagger's long-time companion and common law wife. Early life

For Katy Fuller of Eugene, a student here a decade ago and now an LCC employee whose grandfather was a full-blooded Cherokee from Oklahoma, a longhouse would "mean that we have a place to go. Not just for Native Americans, but everyone."

Merrill has dreamed of having a longhouse - a common gathering place for Native American tribes through the 19th century - since he returned to LCC as the student association coordinator a decade ago. He was a student on campus in the early 1970s.

He organized the first meeting of Native American students back then, he said. Five people showed up in the college's cafeteria.

As far as he knows, Merrill said, LCC would be the first community college in the nation to build a longhouse.

That means the project is about halfway financed, Merrill said.

The hope is to raise the rest of the money within the next year, then begin construction soon after.

"It makes me feel good to see this all happening," said Merrill's son, Robert Merrill Robert Merrill (June 4, 1917 – October 23, 2004) was an American operatic baritone.
