 of the 18-store upscale grocery chain that bears the family name, died of pneumonia pneumonia (nmōn`yə), acute infection of one or both lungs that can be caused by a bacterium, usually Streptococcus pneumoniae  at his Encino home. He was 84. Gelson and his brother Eugene opened their first upscale market in 1951, a Burbank store that stocked top-quality merchandise and offered premium service.
