Greetings from M Street!

2005 is already shaping up to be a busy year with continued activity on many topics and new initiatives in other areas.

In conjunction with the January LWVUS LWVUS League of Women Voters of the United States  Board meeting, we kicked off the year with a festive Open House to celebrate the League's 85th Birthday and our new office space. Invited guests included local League leaders, funders, coalition partners, individual donors and other friends from the Washington government, nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

, think tank and academic communities. The event maximized the League's visibility, highlighting our recent work and introducing our plans for future activities. To top it off, our newly decorated walls displayed wonderful historical testimonies to the League's accomplishments from the 1920s through 2004.

In February, we announced our "Democracy Agenda" to guide our advocacy and public education efforts (see Out Front). We also launched a new initiative, "Local Voices: Citizens Conversations on Civil Liberties and Secure Communities," to foster public dialogue on the balance between civil liberties and homeland security Noun 1. In late March, the League received a new accolade--the National Association of Secretaries of State The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) is a group comprised of the Secretaries of State of the states and territories of the United States. Without question, this national recognition comes to the League because of all our efforts--from individual members and local Leagues to the state Leagues to the national level--and we ALL can take great pride in being so honored.
