Greenplum, JasperSoft and Kinetic Release Open Source Business Intelligence Technology at OSCON.PORTLAND, Ore. -- Bizgres Project Launches First BI Development Stack, Incorporates Open Source Reporting and ETL Technologies with Optimized Distribution of PostgreSQL (database) PostgreSQL - /'post-gres-kyu-el/ An enhancement of the POSTGRES database system. PostgreSQL is an advanced relational database management system with some object oriented approaches. PostgreSQL is developed and distributed as free software, and while retaining its freedom it remains technically and featurewise a worthy competitor to even the most advanced commercial alternatives. for BI Workloads Greenplum, JasperSoft and Kinetic Networks today released the core of the industry's first complete open source business intelligence (BI) development stack. Available through the Bizgres Project, the integrated technologies provide developers with an open source alternative to proprietary BI solutions. To underscore how easily data warehousing and analytics solutions can be built on Bizgres, the companies created the Bizgres Clickstream The trail of mouse clicks made by a user performing a particular operation on the computer. It often refers to linking from one page to another on the Web. sample application. Bizgres Clickstream provides detailed reporting of web site activity and use at the lowest cost of ownership for organizations of all sizes-- giving business users from the executive suite to the marketing department direct access to web-based data and analysis. Demonstrations of Bizgres Clickstream are available at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON OSCON - O'Reilly Open Source Convention), in the JasperSoft booth, #916. "The open source community and enterprises of all sizes are beginning to seek alternatives to proprietary data warehousing and analytics solutions. Key to making open source BI successful in the enterprise will be the level of integration between the various tools. This partnership is significant in that it represents the emergence of a LAMP-like stack for BI," said Stacey Quandt, IT analyst, Quandt Analytics. The integrated solution combines open source extract-transform-load (ETL) technologies from Kinetic Networks; the most widely deployed open source operational reporting system; JasperReports, from JasperSoft; and the Bizgres data warehousing database based on PostgreSQL. Launched in April 2005, Bizgres is a Greenplum-sponsored, community-supported project aimed at making PostgreSQL the industry's most robust, highest-performance open source platform for BI. One of the key features in this release of Bizgres is table partitioning support, a critical capability for large data warehousing applications. The Bizgres Clickstream example application showcases the capabilities of the newly integrated components - automating the collection and processing of web server logs, populating a multi-dimensional warehouse schema, and delivering a set of out-of-the-box reports on web site activity. "A primary focus of The Bizgres Project is to deliver 'real-world' solutions that are simple and straightforward for an end user to download and immediately begin using," said Sam Mohamad, CEO of Greenplum. "The contributions of world-class partners and developers are critical to the success of the effort. With this partnership, Bizgres is clearly emerging as a powerful platform that will seamlessly integrate the best open source technologies to support the BI needs of all types of enterprises and markets." "As the leader in commercial open source reporting, we're pleased to cooperate with other open source companies working on the Bizgres project to build broadly deployable open source BI software," said Paul Doscher, CEO of JasperSoft. "By providing customers with simple and highly functionally open source BI stacks, we will further accelerate enterprise adoption of JasperReports, which already has more than 10,000 deployments with 420,000 downloads." "We are looking forward to contributing our system-integration expertise and data-integration platform (KETL) to the Bizgres community," added Juan Carlos Rojas, CEO of Kinetic Networks. "For years, we have seen large organizations derive significant benefits from their investments in BI. We are excited about the potential of open source projects to reduce the cost of these implementations, thus making valuable insights available to more of the market." Availability The new reporting and ETL components are incorporated in the newly available Bizgres version 0.7, which is available to download as a source distribution at www.bizgres.org, and as a binary distribution at www.greenplum.com. The clickstream application is also available for download at www.bizgres.org.
