Green Mountain Power Receives Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence.

COLCHESTER, Vt. -- Vermont Governor Jim Douglas honored Green Mountain Power (NYSE:GMP) with the state's highest environmental award for its work in environmental reporting and in treating petroleum contaminated soil naturally at its land farm in Berlin. The award was presented to Mary Powell, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Green Mountain Power, at a ceremony at the Statehouse.

"We were thrilled to be recognized for our innovative work in using bio-remediation to treat soils and for our Corporate Responsibility report, because publishing a corporate responsibility report is an important way to communicate transparently about where we have performed well and where we need to improve," said Ms. Powell. Green Mountain Power is one of only a handful of Vermont businesses and the only utility in Vermont to publish a corporate responsibility report.

Green Mountain Power's Berlin Landfarm demonstrates an effective way to treat contaminated soils with a natural, biological process. The Company diverts approximately 7.5 tons of petroleum-contaminated soil and debris each year from the conventional hazardous waste stream for treatment at the Berlin Landfarm. Green Mountain Power workers treat the petroleum-contaminated soils by adding organic material (cow manure) to the soil, then tilling it to encourage natural aeration. The soil is treated with the bio-remediation process until it tests clean.

Green Mountain Power has recently published its second Corporate Responsibility Report, which uses the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines to describe the environmental, social and financial dimensions of its operations. As a result of publishing its first report, Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility in 2006 named Green Mountain Power "Large Company Leader of the Year."

Recent initiatives described in the Corporate Responsibility report include the introduction of "Greener Mountain Power," where customers can choose 100 percent renewable power; the augmentation of the Green Mountain Power fleet with seven gas/electric hybrids, vehicles getting more than 15 miles per gallon better than the vehicles they replaced; how Green Mountain Power's anti-idling guidelines help to minimize unnecessary diesel emissions; and the results of its conversion to a 20% biodiesel mix for its larger vehicles.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) uses a multi-stakeholder process to develop and disseminate globally applicable Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. The Guidelines were created for voluntary use by organizations for reporting on the economic, environmental and social dimensions of their activities, products and services. GRI is a collaborator of the United Nations Environment Program and works in cooperation with the UN Global Compact.
