areas of Colorado and Arizona that have been severely damaged by wildfires. This marks the second time that Green Mountain Coffee has supported tree-planting efforts of the NADF. In 2001, the Company funded NADF's distribution of 100,000 tree seedlings to the organization's new members for planting.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters helped finance construction of the first Native American-owned and operated utility-scale wind turbine, working with Vermont-based NativeEnergy. Formally dedicated in early May, the Rosebud Sioux turbine sits on top of a 170-foot tubular tower with three blades that have a diameter of 150 feet. It will use South Dakota's significant wind resources to generate enough clean, renewable electricity to power about 220 homes. The turbine will reduce emissions of more than 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide over its operating life by replacing electricity on the most intensely coal-fired electricity grid in the country, with the additional benefit of improved air quality. It is hoped that the Rosebud wind turbine will be the first phase of an inter-tribal wind development project that will ultimately revitalize tribal communities with a sustainable source of power and employment.

The Rosebud turbine was funded in part by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc., Vermont Businesses for Businesses for Social Responsibility, The Timberland Company, Stonyfield Farm, and others who are supporting renewable energy to offset their greenhouse gas emissions with NativeEnergy. Green Mountain Coffee's contribution will offset 2,302 tons of carbon dioxide - the annual emissions of 384 cars - offsetting the climate impact of a year of the Company's roasting operations. This also approximates the number of vehicles driven by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' full-time employees working at the Company's Waterbury, Vermont facilities.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and the other participating organizations offset their carbon emissions through the purchase of renewable energy credits from NativeEnergy. These purchases helped pay the Rosebud turbine's up-front capital costs, helping it proceed to construction. The credits are donated to Clean Air-Cool Planet, a New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  based non-profit organization that is engaged in finding practical solutions to climate change, which will retire them to ensure the environmental benefits.

On April 3, 2003 Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc., the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Foundation, and Clean Air-Cool Planet signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to reduce or offset GMCR emissions of carbon dioxide and to influence GMCR customers, consumers, and suppliers to do the same. This MOU will strengthen the Company's ability to identify additional future opportunities to reduce emissions in support of its Environmental Management System targets.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. is a leader in the specialty coffee industry and has been recognized by Forbes Magazine for the past three years as one of the "200 Best Small Companies in America." Green Mountain Coffee seeks to make the world a better place for present and future generations by operating in an environmentally and socially conscientious manner. The Company contributes at least five percent of its pre-tax profit annually to support socially responsible initiatives, many of which it has supported for over 10 years. In 2003, the Rainforest Alliance recognized Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as its "Corporate Sustainable Standard-Setter" for the Company's commitment to sourcing coffee in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
