Greek's no longer chic at Alfred U: tragedy forces school to ban fraternitizes and sororities. The terms "fraternity" and "sorority" (from the Latin words frater and soror at the school. "The Greek system is beyond repair," said trustee chairman Robert McComskey. The trustee's report supported contentions that the fraternity system promoted dangerous practices such as drinking and hazing, which have led to at least 84 deaths and injuries at schools across the country since January 2000. "From this report it became clear to all of us that our Greek system simply does not contribute to the type of learning environment we want at Alfred University," McComskey told The New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States.
