Greece bars student confessions at school.

 have dumped the practice of permitting the nation's Orthodox Church to hear the confessions of students on school grounds.

The Orthodox Church, which is officially recognized by Greece, has railed against the national government's attempts to create some separation between government and religion.

A statement issued by the Greek church's governing body Noun 1. governing body - the persons (or committees or departments etc.) who make up a body for the purpose of administering something; "he claims that the present administration is corrupt"; "the governance of an association is responsible to its members"; "he  decried the government's decision, saying that it "hurts the children themselves, depriving them of the unique opportunity to convey to a priest their most difficult and, at times, explosive problems," the Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency.

The Archbishop of Athens and All of Greece Christodoulos said in an October sermon that the church "resists every form of separation between Church and State," the Athens News Agency The Athens News Agency (ANA) is one of the two major news agencies in Greece.

"In our country," Christodoulos continued, "so-called liberal reformers want to set us back and to create new situations, where Greece will be a completely secular state A secular state is a state or country that is officially neutral in matters of religion, neither supporting nor opposing any particular religious beliefs or practices. A secular state also treats all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and does not give preferential , with no prevailing religion and confession of faith."
