The offerings are fairly evenly distributed between private courses, those open only to members, and public courses where anyone can play. There are also seven municipal courses in the region. The region's courses include a healthy sampling of upper end courses and a large number that charge moderate fees. The course with the highest weekend green fees is Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. . Its fees to play on the weekends are $120, with a cart included. The No. 2 highest weekend green fees can be found at Robinson Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The cattle ranch was introduced from Latin America to Texas and the plains of the W United States and Canada. in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , another public club, with weekend green fees of $117, a price that also includes a cart. Valencia Valencia, region, Spain Valencia (välān`thēä), autonomous region (1990 pop. 3,902,429) and former kingdom, E Spain, on the Mediterranean. It now comprises the provinces of Alicante, Castellón, and Valencia. Country Club, No. 3 on our list, also commands weekend green fees of over $100. The private club charges weekend green fees of $102 and weekday green fees of $72, with a cart included in both rates. The semi-private Moorpark Country Club, which has members but allows public access, is No. 4 on the list, with weekend green fees of $90 and weekday green fees of $75 for non-members. Canyons occur most often in arid or semiarid regions. Some canyons (e.g., the Grand Canyon) are spectacular natural features. See also submarine canyon. , the Lost Canyons Golf Club provides players with two 18-hole courses; the Sky Course, which follows the canyon ridgelines, and the Shadow Course, which follows the canyon floor. Built in 2000, the Pete Dye-designed course is privately owned and open to the public. Green fees are $120 on the weekends and $95 on the weekdays, with a cart included. Rates are discounted for Simi Valley residents, seniors and juniors. Lost Canyons also has a practice range available, as well as golf instruction. The club includes a restaurant, 20,000-square foot clubhouse and event facilities. In 2003, Lost Canyons Golf Club was home to the 2003 ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network National Golf Challenge and the ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic.
