Richard Wright was one of the few African Americans of his time to do travel writing and during the 1950s produced four travel narratives. In this collection of essays, edited by Virginia Whatley Smith, associate professor of English at University of Alabama The University of Alabama (also known as Alabama, UA or colloquially as 'Bama) is a public coeducational university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. Founded in 1831, UA is the flagship campus of the University of Alabama System. , Birmingham, multinational scholars look at Wright's approach to the genre of travel writing. They critique Wright's portrayal of people and customs in his travel narratives and his unfinished book on French West Africa French West Africa, former federation of eight French overseas territories. The constituent territories were Dahomey (now Benin), French Guinea (now Guinea), French Sudan (now Mali), Côte d'Ivoire, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso). . This book affirms that through his travel writings, Wright laid the groundwork for contemporary travel writing and postcolonial literature. Includes nine photos taken by Wright on his journeys.
