Great horned owl. (Nature Watch).

Did You Know? Great horned owls are among the first birds to lay their eggs each year. The female usually lays two or three eggs over a few days, beginning as early as February. Usually, the air is still cold, so she must begin sitting on her eggs as soon as the first one is laid. After about thirty days the eggs hatch, and the owlets stay in the nest for about six weeks.

Try This: With an adult, find a wooded area and listen for owls hooting. The best times to listen are just as night falls and in the morning just before the sun comes up. You may hear any one of several kinds of owls. Many of them make the familiar hoo sound when calling. But some have very different sounds. For example, the screech owl sounds like a horse whinnying.
