Unfortunately, with the proposal to eliminate shared revenues to local units of government in Wisconsin, many leaders faced with potentially shrinking budgets have questioned the value of membership of their park and recreation personnel in associations and societies. This short-sighted approach could have future ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl  far greater than the cost of dues. Intangible benefits of membership can be overlooked if we don't remind our leaders of their importance, through such benefits as enhancing professional growth, career development and training, access to information, industry promotion and representation before government. With today's increasing market pressures, parks and recreation associations help communities manage the strategic challenges of shrinking budgets, downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

But membership is more than that--it's also about civic responsibility. Perhaps Teddy Roosevelt said it best, "Every man owes part of his time and money to the business or industry to which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere." Share these thoughts with your leaders and help them understand the significance of associations contributing to their own proffesional growth and that of their communities.
