repertoire for flutists. This collection presents excerpts involving close coordination of two flutes from thirty-three orchestral works, from Bach to Brahms to Stravinsky. It is actually three books in one: a first flute book, second flute book and an alto flute book. Oust three excerpts include alto: Daphnis et Chloe, The Planets and The Rite of Spring.)

Jeanne Baxtresser has provided extensive commentary, including historical background, tempo information and practice suggestions for the study of each excerpt. Two of her former orchestral colleagues, Renee Siebert (second flute, New York Philharmonic) and David Cramer (associate principal flute, Philadelphia Orchestra Philadelphia Orchestra, founded 1900 by Fritz Scheel, who was its conductor until his death in 1907. Also, essays by all three flutists describe the responsibilities and joys of collaboration within the orchestral flute section, as well as practical advice for audition preparation. , symphonies.

An extremely valuable feature is the inclusion of complete parts for several of the works, notably Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe, Brahms's Haydn Variations (Nos. 3 and 5), Prokofiev's Classical Symphony (fourth movement) and Bach's B Minor Mass and Magnificat. Flutists can experience the stamina and concentration needed for actual performance of these demanding works.

Care has been taken to print the music exactly as it appears in the original flute parts, even preserving awkward page turns. Flutists will find this very helpful for audition preparation. If there are errors in the original parts, they are listed and corrected in the commentary.

In her preface, Baxtresser emphasizes the importance of practicing both first and second flute parts to fully understand the structure and design of the duos. Learning to listen as you play--matching styles, tone qualities, shadings of articulation and precise rhythms--is the ultimate goal in ensemble performance. This book provides an ideal vehicle for such ensemble practice.

For college and serious high school music majors, for orchestral flutists and also for amateurs, Great Flute Duos is a valuable resource. It is an invitation to participate actively, with a partner, in some of the world's greatest orchestral repertoire.
