Great Florida birding trail complete.


With the January opening of a section of trail in south Florida connecting 116 sites, the Great Florida Birding Trail The 2000 mile (3200 km)long Great Florida Birding Trail (GFBT) is a collection of more than 400 locations in the U.S. state of Florida. The sites were chosen to conserve and enhance the state's bird habitats through promotion of birdwatching, environmental education  is complete. The project, which began in 2000, encompasses 2,000 miles of highway trails designed to conserve and enhance Florida's bird habitat.

The newly opened section includes areas around the beaches of Fort Myers Fort Myers, city (1990 pop. 45,206), seat of Lee co., SW Fla., on the Caloosahatchee River, near the Gulf of Mexico; founded 1850, inc. 1905. It has a tourist trade and light industry and is a shipping point for citrus fruits, winter vegetables, flowers (especially  and Sanibel, named the top bird-watching destination in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The gateway to the new loop is located at Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a National Audubon Society sanctuary located in southwest Florida, north of Naples, Florida and east of Bonita Springs. The sanctuary was established to protect one of the largest remaining stands of Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum  in Lee County, Fla. The sanctuary was selected as the gateway because of its visitor services, a 2.25-mile boardwalk and the state-of-the-art Blair Audubon Center.
