Great American Cleanup sweeps through nation's public areas.


The state of Mississippi hosted Keep America Beautiful Keep America Beautiful is an environmental organization founded in 1953. It is the largest community improvement organization in the United States, with over 560 affiliate organizations (similar to local chapters) and more than 15,000 participating communities in their signature  for the kickoff of 2006's The Great American Cleanup, which is in its 21st year.

The March 2 kickoff event took place on the Biloxi Town Green to spark interest to help improve the city of Biloxi, which was devastated dev·as·tate

Nationally, the effort was estimated to involve 2.5 million people, who volunteered 8 million hours to clean, beautify and improve 15,000 communities with about 30,000 events in every state. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush served as honorary chairs of the event.
